From James Cunningham - Head Coach
Well, Mother Nature was kind to everyone in Whitehorse, delivering
conditions so that we could get the first race under our belts.
Ontario put in a very strong showing in the interval start classic
races with Alana Thomas and Gavin Hamilton leading the way with
a pair of 4th place finishes. The entire team performed very well
under trying conditions with seven of the ten athletes finishing
in the top-20. The race start was delayed until 3pm to get the
temperature up above the -20 limit and we had a little fresh snow
thrown in just for some variety. Even with the delay we barely
managed to get up to -18 and the skiers had to contend with the
bitter cold temperatures and the unbelievably slow skiing conditions.
Everyone on the team showed amazing grit and determination to achieve
such great results and today was certainly an indication of how
strong our team is.
Tuesday's races are free technique sprints starting at 11:30 with
the qualifying rounds and 2:00 for the heats. The skiers are eager
to improve on their performances of today and step up on the podium.
